The Ontario Wheelchair Open Curling event returned this weekend to the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club, November 28–30, with seven wheelchair curling teams competing, alongside an “ad-hoc” stick curling team to round out the competition. This year’s tournament marked a historic moment as the event was officially renamed the “Shauna Petrie Memorial Ontario Wheelchair Open” to honour Shauna Petrie’s extraordinary contributions to wheelchair curling in Ontario.
At the opening ceremonies, organizers celebrated Shauna Petrie’s decades-long commitment to promoting and growing wheelchair curling across the province. Her dedication has created opportunities for athletes of all abilities to compete and thrive, and this event now carries her name as a lasting tribute.
Emerging as the champions of the 2025 Shauna Petrie Memorial Ontario Wheelchair Open was the Toronto Wheelchair Curling Team, Shauna Petrie’s own team, led by skip Billy Bridges. Joining him were third Chris Rees, second Jeff Harris, and lead Sheri Roberts. Their consistent teamwork, strategic play, and determination throughout the tournament secured them the top spot on the podium.
Second place went to Team Quebec, with skip Carl Marquis guiding the team, supported by third Sebastien Boisvert, second Johanne Mathieu, and lead Noemie Gagnon. Team Quebec displayed skill and resilience in each match, narrowly missing the championship in a hard-fought final.
The third-place position was claimed by Team Ross/Allen, led by Shannon Ross, who delivered strong performances and competitive spirit throughout the competition.
In the consolation rounds, Team Canada emerged victorious as the Consolation Champion, while the Pat O. Reid Trophy was awarded to Team Gale for their enthusiasm and sportsmanship.
This event also served as the final qualifier for the Ontario Winter Games, happening in Orillia this February. The teams earning OWG berths will be announced later this week.
The Shauna Petrie Memorial Ontario Wheelchair Open continues to provide a premier platform for athletes to demonstrate their talent, build camaraderie, and advance wheelchair curling in Ontario. The 2026 event dates will be November 27 – 29, 2026.
