OCC Webinar Series – New Year – New Topics for Coaches and Curlers – Register Now!

The Ontario Curling Council and its members the Northern Ontario Curling Association and Curl ON are pleased to announce several more Webinars to educate both curlers and coaches about a variety of  topics.

Registration for all webinars will close 24 hours before to allow for time for organizers to communicate log-in information.  Registration is limited to 50 for each event.

In this presentation, our presenter, Ryan Lafraniere will be discussing the various factors that influence competitive team strategy and tactics decision-making.  Ryan will provide an outline of:

  • Strategy v. Tactics
  • Scoreboard management
  • Tracking data-based tactical evidence
  • Developing a team ‘Playbook’
  • Team reflective processing

About the Presenter:  Ryan Lafraniere

Ryan is the Director of the Amethyst Curling Camp and Varsity Men’s and Women’s Coach for Laurentian University.  Ryan is a Certified Competition Development Coach, an OCC HP Consultant Coach and is a Learning Facilitator and Evaluator for the NOCA.


Topic:  “Investing in Straight”  – a Curling Delivery Technical Review

Nicole Westlund-Stewart has PhD in Kinesiology (Sport Psychology).  Nicole is an active competitor, coach and instructor.  Including; Champions Cup Grand Slam Participant (2016), Ontario Scotties Semi-Finalist x3 (2014, 2015, 2016), Amethyst Instructor x 4 years, Trillium Instructor x 4 years and Trillium Assistant x 2 years.

Competitive Curling athletes can be subject to doping control rules and testing at any time and at any event.

Coaches play a role in providing athletes with education and support to ensure they play ‘clean’.

This webinar will assist coaches to understand the following:

  • Why athletes are subject to doping control testing
  • What are banned substances
  • What products pose the greatest risk to athletes
  • Who runs the Canadian Anti-doping Program and what are the rules
  • What sanctions are given to athletes and teams if a positive doping test occurs
  • What steps can coaches take to ensure athletes meet all the requirement

About the Presenter:  Karen Watson

Karen Watson works with Curling Canada National Team Program as the Health and Doping Control Consultant. This involves assisting athletes to understand doping control rules and procedures, monitoring the CCES online education program and reviewing their health and wellness in preparation for national, world and Olympic competitions.

As well Karen has been coaching Curling since 2001 beginning as a volunteer working with juvenile, junior, adult and wheelchair teams. Karen has worked part time as a Regional Coach for Curl BC involved with mentoring coaches and assisting with the development of athletes and teams of all ages in the High Performance Program.  Karen’s volunteer work in Curling includes being the Master Learning Facilitator for the NCCP activities for Curling in BC.

Karen is a Competition Development Certified Coach for Curling and is working on her Level 4. Coaching is a second career following a 20 year career as a Nurse Administrator with an MScN.

Coaching tools have come a long way from the stopwatch, notebook and pencil (although still essential). This webinar will look at the current technology being used by high performance coaches around the world in practice and game situations. Hardware and software options will be explored and their implementation will be discussed. Consideration for different budgets and portability will be considered.

Self-professed coaching geek Scott Arnold is a Chartered Professional Curling Coach holding his Level 4 Certification. His current role as Competitions and Development Officer for the World Curling Federation sees him travelling worldwide instructing athletes, training coaches and promoting the sport in new and established regions of the curling world.
