The 2024 Ontario Wheelchair Open Curling event took place from November 29 to December 1 at the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club, featuring 11 teams, including two from Team Canada, two from Team USA, and one from Korea. This annual competition showcased exceptional international talent, skill, and sportsmanship in a series of closely contested matches.
Emerging as the champions was Team Canada Red, with a 7-4 victory over Team USA Blue. The team was led by skip Gill Dash, a seasoned curler with multiple titles to his name. Joining him were second Dean Douglas, lead Chrissy Molnar, and fourth Jon Thurston. Their cohesive teamwork and strategic play throughout the tournament secured them the top spot on the podium.
Finishing in second place was Team USA Blue. Skip Matt Thums guided the team with precision, supported by third Sean O’Neill, second Shawn Sadowski, and lead Laura Dwyer. Their consistent performance and determination were evident as they advanced through the rounds to the final match.
Claiming the third-place position was Korea Disabled Veteran. Traveling over 10,000 km to compete, they brought both resilience and competitive spirit, earning them a well-deserved podium finish and solidifying their reputation on the international stage.
An honourable mention goes to fourth-place Team Denys from Peterborough and Consolation Gold winner Team USA Red. Congratulations to all participating teams, including the Toronto Wheelchair Curling Team, Team Canada White, Team Gale from Newmarket, Pat O. Reid Division winner Team Bax, Equipe Brunet from Quebec, and Team Grose from Ilderton.
The Ontario Wheelchair Open continues to be a cornerstone event, providing a platform for international wheelchair curling athletes to showcase their abilities. This year’s event not only highlighted Ontario’s dedication to the sport but also strengthened international camaraderie, drawing talent from North America, Asia, and beyond to compete at the highest level.
